Procrastination is defined as the action of delaying or postponing something.

While many professionals are concerned about their career growth, professional development, or promotion; many seem to procrastinate.  A great number of inquiries has been forwarded to us asking about our trainings and requirements to passing the exam and being PMP certified.  A great number as well on our follow-up list remains on the same position as the time they first inquired. In my experience, students way back 5 years ago still suddenly pops an email asking about the exam.

What are the reasons that individuals look at in delaying their success?

  • Too many things at hand – will it ever slow down at work? C’mon, you know for a fact you will never run out of work.
  • Too expensive – consider it as an investment. An investment that will surely reap rewards for you.  How much is your latest gadget anyway? How much is that travel you are planning for? Investing in your own career is the wisest investment that you are to make.  While some organizations offer training opportunities for their resources, it is not always their priority.  Waiting for them may sometimes hurt or delay your progress.  Personally, I took that bold step on paying my own trainings and other expenses until I completed my certifications.  It paid me well.
  • Not a priority – what is your priority? Family? That is definitely taken. Health? Sure it should be. Education? Food trips? Luxury? Travel? Whatever it may be, realize that you will get more of these when you secure a better paying job or position that your Certification can bring to you. Better position, higher salary equates to providing more for your family, health, travel and leisure, and even a business – which almost everybody dreams of having one.
  • I am not ready yet – you will never be ready unless you focus on preparing.

We can hear many other variants of these reasons but at the end of the day, these reasons will always be there to impede or even stop you from progressing unless you face it and win over it.  Your success depends on you, make things happen.  STOP PROCRASTINATING and seize the day for your career.

Project Management Institute – Project Management Professional (PMP®) Certification is the most prestigious Certification of our time.  It brings not just confidence to the individual but more so to organizations engaging in projects.  Many professionals now realize the advantages and benefits that this certification brings. (See my blog Career Advantages of being PMP® Certified.)

Now you want to take the exam, and be part of this prestigious roster of Project Managers.  Question is, are you ready to take the PMP Certification Exam?  Here’s your quick checklist and some tips to find out.

  • Bachelor Degree (or higher) – any course is accepted
  • 35 Hours of Project Management Education (also called ‘contact hours’) – preferably executed by PMI R.E.P.’s (Registered Education provider) to be sure that the education acquired is aligned with PMI standards. Find R.E.P. in your area here.
  • 4,500 hours leading and directing projects – PMI counts only the standard 40 hours/week, thus to complete the required hours a minimum of 2.5 – 3 years project experience. Forget your experience that is beyond 3 years to focus on what can be included to complete this requirement.  Hours are divided into project phases as follows: Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring & Controlling, and Closing.

Upon submission (on-line) via PMI website. A normal turn-around time of 7-10 days will finalize your eligibility to take the exam.  PMI will revert to you via email informing you if you are approved to take the exam, at times PMI conducts an audit based on your submitted credentials.

Be ready with your $555 payment for non-members or a discounted rate of $405 for PMI members.  Membership fee is $129 ($119 for renewals) and $20 for local chapter membership. So use the $150 discount to be a member (you save $1 doing this ?) and get a complimentary copy of the latest Project Management Book of Knowledge (PMBOK®) which is the official reference for the PMI Certification Exam.  Other membership perks are discussed in a separate blog that I wrote.

Lastly, while it is an option to self-study for the exam taking a review course from a reputable course provider (preferably R.E.P.) is highly recommended.  It cuts your study time by folds and gives you a higher chance of passing this very tricky exam.  Practitioners most often than not find it difficult to squeeze in study time with the many things that they are juggling around, and it is always a challenge to focus which makes a good excuse when they fail the exam. ? Many end up not taking the exam because of the frustration of not being able to review properly and not feeling ready for the longest time.  Since you are investing not only money but effort and time, it will be a wise idea to take a professional review course that will guide you and steer focus on your study/review for your certification that will forever change your career and even your personal life – your PMP Certified status.

Training. Training. Training.  An organization or an individual has the responsibility to keep on learning.  To progress and develop, training is one avenue to learn.

The course content is a significant item to look at, this will provide a snapshot of what can be expected from a course.  But the course content can be great yet the speaker who will deliver it may not be as great.  So let us understand, how important is the speaker’s profile and capability to deliver such a course, is he an expert on the topic, is he a practitioner, is he experienced enough to deliver the topic or is he just another good reader?

I asked this because I see (and know) many self-proclaimed trainers that read through a course outline, studies the content and claims to be an expert on any topic.  Many even challenge to customize the content. While it is true that there are great speakers and trainers out there, one question to be asked is – is he or she a practitioner?

A real-world practitioner will share meaningful insights on the topic, his vast and rich experiences will flow out as he speaks.  While a non-practitioner may deliver the course line by line, point by point but may lack substance for not experiencing what he is teaching first hand.  Examples and applications may differ and the answer to participants question may also differ.  A speaker may answer you like “that is a great question, let me get back to you on that.” ?  While a practitioner, especially an experience one will not just provide an answer to your question;  he will explain and provide you applications and samples perhaps without even forcing it, because he may have experiences about it to share.

It is funny how some people look at handling training like a simple story telling task.  Some reads through materials and references then teach it like a pro. They are good speakers, I never discount anyone’s capability to do such.  But then again, as I was saying, there is a great difference attending a training with a great speaker and a real-world practitioner.

Now, you chose!

5 PROVEN STRATEGIES TO PASS THE PMP CERTIFICATION EXAM

It has been said and proven how PMP Certification Exam enhances not just your resume but your career. I wrote a number of blogs explaining various items about the certification and the exam.  Now, more than test taking skills, here are some strategies that will guarantee a higher chance of passing one of the most coveted certification exams of our time.

  1. Make sure you understand the fundamentals. “Things are easy, when you know what you are doing.” This is a premise that I always tell my students.  To be good at something you first have to understand the basics.  Understanding the basics based on the authority of a given subject matter, in this case – the Project Management Institute. Be sure that you have structured learning of the PMI concepts, the framework, the latest edition of the PMBOK (Project Management Book of Knowledge). Missing this basic item may mean a lot in the course of your preparation for the exam.  To be sure that your learning is aligned with PMI context, validate the provider’s reputation against the Registered Education Provider (R.E.P.) list of the PMI.
  2. Take a review course. You can self-study, that is taken. But taking a structured learning which is a product of years and decades of research regarding the PMP Certification exam cannot be discounted. Taking a review course ups the ante of you passing the exam.  It will guide you and provide a very strategic and well planned approach to studying for the exam.  Not to mention the tips and tricks based on the experts understanding on taking and passing the certification exam.
  3. Think the PMI way. It is a PMI exam, to cut the chase you have to think like PMI for you to pass the exam.
  4. Understand not memorize. A lot of people tend to try and memorize things for the exam, this cannot be the case for the PMP Certification Exam.  Questions are pulled from thousands of questions in the database kept by PMI.  The moment that you click start on your online exam, that is the time questions are pulled for your set of exam questions.  Understanding the concepts behind the exam will provide you far better chance to passing the exam than memorizing a considerable load of information.
  5. Realize that you will never be ready. Many exam takers are taken by anxiety, pressure, exam jitters, and the like. It doesn’t mean that they did not prepare.  The exam is the culmination of a long series of efforts, time and may be financial investments. It is typical to be nervous about it.  Some people wait until they become comfortable for the exam, realize that it will never happen.  Proper preparation by doing necessary steps to taking the exam will provide you enough to take on and conquer the exam.

To date, there are more than 750,000 PMP Certified individuals globally as per PMI statistics of 2017.  This number is not enough to cater for the world’s requirement for certified Project Managers.  Job sites are filled with Project Management positions requiring and/or taking the PMP Credential as an advantage.

The PMP Certification Exam, you have read quite a lot of information about it.  How significant it is, how it would drastically change your career, what are the benefits, and a lot more good things it can bring to you.  On top of it are stories on how this certification has changed things the lives of professionals who embraced it.  Now the question, “Am I eligible to take the Exam?”

Here is a quick checklist on the Eligibility requirements.

  • 35 hours contact time– this pertains to 35 hours of Project Management related trainings, preferably PMI based. (See advantage of learning from PMI-Registered Education Provider -R.E.P. here). While there are many project management training providers, it is recommended to take your training with PMI Registered Education Providers to be sure that what you will be learning is aligned to the latest releases of PMI and can be counted as contact hours.
  • Project Hours
    • For Degree holders (any 4-year course) – 4,500 hoursof project engagement, this should be computed at standard 8 hours a day or 40 hours per week (Over time not to be included). This account for the past 2.5 – 3 years’ experience from the time the application is to be submitted.
    • For Non-degree holders – 7,500 hoursof project engagement, accounts for 3.5 – 4 years of project engagement.
  • Exam Fee
    • USD 550 for non-member
    • USD 405 for PMI Members

PMI Membership is $129 for new members and $119 for renewal and additional $20 for Local chapter membership (See membership benefits). I recommend signing up for membership first before processing your application to avail of the discount and get the free resources available including the complimentary personalized soft copy (thus, cannot be shared or distributed) of the latest version of PMBOK Guide as part of your membership.

I am often asked if there is are specific industries allowed to take the exam, the answer is no.  All organizations have projects, Project Management is industry-agnostic.  So, whether you are an I.T. practitioner, Construction Engineer, Events Manager, Learning & Development Professional, Healthcare care or any other industry not mentioned, you are eligible to take the PMP Certification exam in this regard.

A training company in Ayala, Makati City provides extensive Review Course including assistance to the eligibility application as part of their review course, follow this link for their contact details.  PMI declines a considerable number of applications that does meet basic parameters during the application process.

There you go, understanding your eligibility is now as easy as 1-2-3.  Good luck and see you in the Project Management arena!

You might have been browsing and checking online about the benefits of being a Project Management Institute (PMI®) – Project Management Professional (PMP®) Certified. You will see a lot and are all true. Compressing the list further to get you focused on your goal to PMP Certification, taken my personal and professional experiences on my PMP journey here are the points I would share with you.

  1. Personal Achievement – this is foremost of the benefits I would say, you may or may not have much money, friends, a job, and other things but achievements brings you to the next level, a clear sense of accomplishment. It makes you static, believe more in yourself and gear up to the challenges ahead. Without this certification, I may still be a lowly employee struggling for a promotion. In the government sector, I still remember one of the bosses saying, “You are good for promotion but we cannot proceed unless you have your master’s degree or a certification.” I took this certification path and a day after passing the exam I resigned.
  2. Increase your market value – why did I resign the day after I passed? Because I know looking at many job sites that opportunities for a PMP Certified individual is a lot. You check it for yourself. Browse through job sites (local or not) type in ‘PMP’ or ‘PMBOK’ or ‘PMI’ and there, you will see how much opportunity you will have when you are certified.  The industry is continuously growing as more and more organization realizes the importance of Project Management and having a PMP Certified resource in their roster.  It increases an organization’s value by raises its image as a forerunner of a globally accepted standards, that is PMI and the PMBOK.’
  3. Command higher salary – given the fact that you are certified, you can command higher salary. You can check salary surveys to see how a certified Project Manager salary in a certain area goes and see the difference.  In one of the multi-national company that I joined, they even gave me a ‘salary premium’ on top of our agreed figures.  And why would companies do that? Because as mentioned above having a PMP Certified individual in their roster raises their industry image as one who adheres to the PMI Global Standards and with that, raises the confidence of their clients which turns to more sales and higher pricing for the company services and offerings.
  4. Always have options – a lot of professionals feel lack of options after staying with a company for many years, and with that, many succumb to the wall of no return. They opt to just stay in their miserable situation leading to an unhealthy life.  With this globally recognized certification, you will always have options not just to go hunt for another job but perhaps engage in more challenging work such as consulting, trainings, and others.  Always good having other options, than you being just an option.
  5. Be recognized – needless to say that recognition equates to compensation, may not be literal but when you are recognized as an expert you get both the soft and hard benefits of being one. Better environment, bigger projects, more exposures are being entrusted to you. Why? Because the organization recognizes you and your expertise and PMP Certification helps to get you there.

There’s a lot more benefits of being Certified PMP than the above, I strongly encourage you to draw you path to PMP Certification.

Competition in the workplace is fierce, long hours of work is sometimes taken as a measure for going up to the next level.  Being active on company events may also spell out something for that.  But wait, shouldn’t it be on expertise? And what could best signify your expertise and make it shine in front of your bosses than a PMP Certification? The certification not just shouts your adherence to the Global Practices in project Management, like a master’s degree it shows your eagerness to continuously learn, that’s one of the great qualities of a leader.  Going the extra mile to get things done, being focused on a goal set and accomplishing it.  It is not just an exam, it says more than what meets the eye.

PMP Certification sets you apart, securing this certification tells every employer that you do not just understand the Project Management basics but you adhere to it. This certification tells them that you are worth their trust.  Their million dollar projects, to whom do you think they would entrust it to? In a plain playing field, such will be given to certified Project Managers over those who are not.  Please don’t get me wrong, I am not saying that non-certified resources are not good, they are, in fact they may deliver the same way as everybody else would.  Yet having this Certification, points the first try hand to you.

In the end, Project Management Professional Certification does not just guarantee your understanding of the PMI Framework, nor the Fundamentals of Project Management.  It also sets you apart as an individual who values the Code of Professional Conduct. It is not just an agreement sent forth by PMI when you pass the exam, it is part of the exam – a number of questions pertains to the Code of Professional conduct that is embedded in your understanding when practicing Project Management.

There are a lot more ways that PMP Certification will set you apart from the rest.  Be a star shining on top of the many stars. Be like the north star.

So you have decided to take the PMP Certification path, now what?  First things first, like every endeavor we check our readiness.  Are you ready to take the exam?  Why do we need to be ready?

In the many years of my project management practice including my training years, I came across people who are very confident about their skills and experience.  I even had a student whom prior to taking the exam was talking to me about the Certification Review Course that I am conducting.  He said, “after my 25 years doing this (project management), I don’t think I need that course, I’ve read the PMBOK from cover to cover, I’ll pass it with flying colors.  I already passed the eligibility requirements”.  Before I can say my next word hoping to explain the difference between passing the eligibility and exam itself, he was gone.  He took the exam and few weeks later, he called me asking the for the next scheduled run of the Exam Prep Course.

Reviewing for the exam takes more than just reading, it is understanding concepts after concepts that comprises the Project Management discipline.  Below is a short checklist to help you prepare for the exam.

  • You have a clear goal on why you would want to take the exam – some people take the exam because their company wants them to be certified, or because it is part of their performance metrics. While it is not bad having those for a reason, a personal commitment to passing the exam is significant.  It will give you the drive to continue even on tough schedules at work, at home and sacrificing your personal errands at times as opposed to just doing it because it is required.
  • The eligibility requirements completed – I discussed this in one of my blogs (Please see [reference]), this should be truthful as PMI conducts a random audit and disqualifies those who does not truly meet the eligibility requirements.
  • Review plan – may it be enrolling to a review course, self-studying, group-study, it is up to you. Though we highly-recommend taking the review course as it optimizes learning and shortens your study time to a maximum 40 hours, other approach do work.  Just a word of caution chances of passing varies a lot.
  • Quality Review Materials – people without clear study guide takes a lot of resources from the internet, be mindful that not all resources available from the internet is updated, many are not even verified by PMI. Thus, instead of pointing you closer to passing the exam, it just wastes your time and efforts that heads to failing the exam instead.
  • Committed study time – be it for a review class, self-study sessions, or group studies. Your commitment to keeping up with your schedule is a must. Cramming for this type of exams never work.  Time needs to be spared in preparing for the exam.
  • Support System – whether your family, friends, or colleagues. People supporting you on this life changing twist will help you stay focused and pass the exam instead of hampering you along the way.
  • Budget – it may be less or more depending on the options you take based on your level, availability and commitment. An investment will have to be made, the exam itself for example costs $550 ($405 for PMI Members).  But as I always tell my students, if you can buy thousands of dollars’ worth of gadgets or out of town errands why not spare some for a career investment that will return you more to spend?

The PMP Certification is not just another exam, compared to other certification exams it measures not just the knowledge but the experience and exposure just the same, professional conduct also serves as basis in passing the exam.

Here are 10 things to know about the PMP Certification Exam.

  1. 200 items – the exam is composed of 200 multiple choice items with certain percentage assigned to each process group (Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring & Controlling, Closing).
  2. 25 of the 200 items are not scored – these are called pre-test questions; these questions are placed randomly in the exam and you cannot distinguish them from the scorable items.
  3. 4 hours – the exam takes 4 hours with no scheduled breaks, you can take you break anytime but the clock will continue running.
  4. You can go back – as opposed to other exams that will not let you step back to previous items, the PMI exams lets you go back and review your answered and unanswered items until you finish or ran out of time.
  5. Situational questions – most questions are situational, it measures your real-world experiences in project engagements.
  6. Tricky questions– exam questions are very tricky, some are short questions, some are very long even going multiple paragraphs per item.
  7. Taken from huge database of questions – the questions are taken from a pool of questions. At the time that you start the exam, the system pulls questions from the database given the percentage distribution as discussed in item #1.  So, you and your friend may take the exam at the same time yet different sets of questions will be provided.
  8. Can be scheduled at your convenience – the exam does not have a fixed schedule, once your eligibility application is approved you have 1 full year to schedule your exam at your most convenient time in any Prometric center (you will be provided instructions on how and where to schedule your exam once you pass the eligibility process). I suggest scheduling it on a holiday if you will (yes, they are open on holidays) to go away with all the stress and hassles of travelling and traffic on a normal workday giving you a fresher start when you seat for the exam.
  9. Cost $550 – this is the exam fee for non-members, for PMI members it is $405. The membership is $129 for new members and $119 for renewal, local chapter membership is also available as an option for $20.
  10. 3 chances – just an additional information, in case you fail on your first try, there is a 2nd and 3rd try available with lesser fees (2nd try – $275 for members, $375 for non-members, 3rd try $150 for members, $300 for non-members) but note that this will need to happen within the year of your eligibility approval. In case of yet another failure, applicants are banned for one-year to take the exam and will have to re-apply for eligibility for a fresh new cycle.

Every organization have projects. That is an undeniable statement.  Projects propel the organization through materializing their strategic goals and objectives.  Leaders understand that fact.  Leaders put forward project after project eyeing the success of every endeavor, question is – do they understand the nature of projects?

It is imperative for leaders to understand the nature of projects, how it should be started? how to properly plan it? The proper execution of the plan to closing it.  Many projects are started the wrong way, executed prior to a clear-cut plan, and abandoned when they think the goods has been delivered.  In these endless cycles, company resources are wasted.  Precious time is lost, human efforts go unaccounted, quality compromised.  Over-time, weekend and holiday work are evident in disorganized project execution. Organizational learning and knowledge are also lost, organizational development hampered or worst totally hindered.  All these truths should not go unnoticed, more so ignored.  The Project Management Institute (PMI®) has conducted in-depth studies such as the Pulse of the Profession 2016 that shows the same context I noted above.

Not understanding the nature of projects results to one or more of the following but not limited to:

  • Poorly understood requirements
  • Poor or no planning
  • Uncontrolled changes to the project scope
  • Wrong assignment of resources
  • Poor and untimely acquisition of project resources
  • Poor utilization of project resources
  • Low stakeholder engagement
  • No Risk management
  • Delayed schedule
  • Over spending

These factors definitely impact not just the project but the organization as a whole, leaders should realize the significance of understanding the nature of projects.  Let me end this blog with this simple yet powerful truth.

For organizations to maximize the results of their projects, and steer their organization to the heights of success.  Leaders indeed need to understand the nature of projects.”
